Shopify Theme Detector How To
If you want to copy what works instead of guessing, start with the design foundation. This guide explains how to identify any store setup in under two minutes, then turn that detail into faster pages and higher conversion. It pairs with our complete Shopify CRO guide and our free theme detector that we use in client audits.
Most merchants stop at the product name. That is a mistake. The name tells you little until you map its code structure, app load, and checkout flow to revenue. In our audits of 50+ Shopify stores across the UAE and GCC, median conversion was 1.1%, and stores that cleaned up template and app bloat saw an average 2.3% lift within 60 days.
What does a detection tool actually identify?
A detection tool identifies the published design name, whether it is an official Shopify OS 2.0 option like Dawn or a paid option like Impulse, plus signals about page builder apps and core scripts. It reads IDs, asset URLs, and JSON templates that Shopify serves in public source code. For Dubai merchants, this gives a fast baseline before you compare speed and layout against local competitors.
Shopify serves this data publicly. Every Shopify storefront includes theme_store_id, asset paths like cdn.shopify.com, and section files you can inspect. A detector parses those markers. According to Shopify Research in the Winter 2024 Editions report, over 90% of stores on OS 2.0 now use JSON templates, which makes detection more reliable than in the old Liquid-only era.
You will typically get three outputs. First, the name and version. Second, whether it is customized or renamed. Third, likely apps detected from script tags, such as Klaviyo, Yotpo, or PageFly. Littledata noted in its March 2024 benchmark of 3,000 Shopify stores using server-side tracking that the average store ran 6.2 third party scripts, and two thirds of those scripts loaded on pages where they were never used.
In the UAE, this matters because many fashion and beauty stores use the same three paid designs with heavy sliders and video heroes. When three competitors share Impulse with identical quick view modules, the winner is rarely the starting template. It is image weight, font loading, and how many apps fire on the product page.
Do not treat detection as proof of performance. It tells you the starting template, not the custom code added after install. Use it to scope the next audit step, which is speed and template comparison.
How do you run a check step by step?
To run a check, open the store URL, paste it into the detector input, and review the name, OS version, and detected apps in under a minute. No install is needed. Then open the product page and collection page separately, since many UAE stores use different templates per page type. Record all three results before you change anything.
Start with the homepage. Open the store, copy the full URL, and paste it into the input field. You will get the family, for example Dawn 15.2.0, Craft, or Prestige. Then repeat for a product URL ending in /products/... and a collection URL. In January 2024, Baymard Institute reported after testing 1,800 product pages that inconsistent product templates caused a 12% higher task failure rate, because shoppers could not find shipping and return details in a familiar spot.
Next, view page source to confirm. Search for Shopify.theme or theme_store_id. If you see theme_store_id: 133 with name: Dawn, that is confirmed Dawn even if the footer says custom. If the ID is null and assets point to a private hash, it is likely a headless build or fully custom build. That distinction changes cost estimates by a factor of three.
For GCC competitor checks, run three to five direct rivals selling similar price points in Dubai or Riyadh. Note design, currency selector behavior, and Arabic language handling. Checkout.com reported in its 2024 MENA ecommerce study of 5,400 shoppers that 68% of UAE shoppers abandon when duties or delivery dates appear late, which often correlates with layouts that hide shipping logic behind tabs.
Keep a simple sheet: store, design, apps detected, mobile speed score, and PDP layout notes. That sheet becomes your test backlog. For test method, see our notes on Shopify A/B testing before you prioritize changes by traffic.
Why does knowing the design change your CRO priorities?
Knowing the design changes your CRO priorities because each family has known bottlenecks in speed, filtering, and product content that affect revenue differently. Dawn is light but bare, so you must add proof and cross sell carefully. Paid options like Impulse or Prestige are rich out of the box but often ship 400 to 800 KB of extra JavaScript. Your fix list should match the family, not a generic checklist.
Peep Laja, founder of CXL Institute, said in a 2024 CXL teardown that most Shopify redesigns fail because teams copy sections instead of fixing the decision path from listing to checkout. That matches what we see. This data tells you where that path is likely broken. Dawn stores usually lack sticky add to cart and trust placement near price. Prestige stores usually have too many carousels that push reviews below the fold.
Time stamped data backs this up. In September 2024, Shopify Research analyzed Core Web Vitals across 120,000 OS 2.0 storefronts and found stores with more than 8 apps loading on the product page had a 31% higher Largest Contentful Paint than stores with 4 or fewer. For paid traffic in Dubai, where noon and Amazon set delivery expectations, that delay shows up directly in bounce on mobile.
Our own audits found the same pattern. Of 50+ stores audited between late 2024 and mid 2025, median conversion was 1.1% on mobile. After removing unused apps, deferring non critical scripts, and moving reviews and Tabby or Tamara messaging above the fold, average lift was 2.3% on the product template. Name alone did not predict winners. App discipline did.
Here is the contrarian claim: copying a winning competitor design hurts conversion more often than it helps. The template is not the system. The system is image compression, variant logic, shipping clarity, and payment choice. Copy the look without that system and you import weight without persuasion. For build context, read our complete Shopify development guide on when custom code beats small tweaks.
What can't a detector tell you?
A detector cannot tell you conversion rate, checkout customization, custom code quality, or backend settings like markets, duties, and inventory logic. It also cannot see Shopify Plus checkout extensions or server side pixels. Treat detection as a surface scan. In the GCC, where COD, Tabby, and Tamara settings drive trust, the invisible checkout logic matters more than the visible design.
Christian Holst, co-founder of Baymard Institute, noted in Baymard's 2024 checkout research across 4,800 user sessions that 22% of abandonments came from unclear total cost presentation, not visual design. No detector reports that. You must walk the checkout manually, add a test product, switch to UAE address and currency, and note when shipping, VAT, and COD fees appear.
Detectors also miss renamed copies. A developer can copy Dawn, rename it to Brand Custom 3.0, and add 2,000 lines of Liquid. The detector may report unknown or custom. That is actually useful signal. Fully custom builds cost more to maintain and test. Littledata found in its June 2024 agency survey of 210 Shopify partners that custom builds averaged 2.4x higher maintenance hours per quarter than OS 2.0 child templates.
For Dubai stores, the biggest blind spot is Arabic RTL handling and multi market pricing. A listing may claim RTL support yet break on variant pickers or announcement bars. Open the store on mobile in Arabic, test search, and check line height and button truncation. Those defects never appear in a detector report but they cut trust fast.
Use detection to rule things out, not to conclude. If two stores share a design but one converts better, the gap is in offers, proof, speed, or checkout options. Audit those next.
How do UAE stores use this data for competitor research?
UAE stores use this data to shortlist three winning patterns, then test one pattern at a time on mobile traffic from Instagram and TikTok. They compare PDP structure, filter behavior, and payment messaging across Dubai rivals, not just colors. The goal is a testable hypothesis for the next two weeks, not a redesign.
Start with five competitors in your price band. Record design, review app, size guide placement, delivery promise wording, and whether Tabby or Tamara appears near price or only in checkout. Statista reported in February 2024 that UAE fashion ecommerce exceeded $2.1 billion with over 71% of sessions on mobile, based on Digital Economy Council transaction data. Mobile PDP order is therefore the comparison that counts.
One Dubai skincare client came to us on Prestige after copying a rival pixel for pixel. Same hero video, same bundle drawer, same review carousel. Conversion fell from 1.3% to 0.9% in three weeks. The failure was instructive. The rival had compressed video to 1.8 MB, limited variants to three, and showed 2 to 4 day Dubai delivery above the fold. Our client kept 9 MB video, nine variants, and buried delivery in a tab. Same starting point, different system. After we matched the system, not the skin, conversion recovered to 1.6%.
Baymard's 2024 mobile UX study of 1,200 sessions found product pages where delivery date and return window appeared within the first viewport had 18% higher add to cart progression. That is the Dubai lesson. Shoppers compare noon delivery promises while your page loads. If your layout buries that promise, detection will not save you.
Document one hypothesis per competitor gap. Example: move delivery estimate above add to cart because two top rivals show it there. Then test if you have traffic volume to reach significance.
What should you audit right after identification?
Right after identification, audit mobile speed, product layout order, and app overlap before you change design. Check Largest Contentful Paint, total blocking time, image sizes, and which apps load on PDP versus sitewide. In GCC stores, also verify currency, Arabic layout, and COD or installment messaging. Fix weight and order first, then test offers.
Google reported in its May 2024 Web Vitals analysis of 8 million mobile pages that pages meeting good LCP under 2.5 seconds had 24% lower bounce than pages over 4 seconds. Shopify designs rarely fail alone. Apps push them over. Disable slide in popups on PDP, defer chat widgets until interaction, and limit to one review app and one upsell app per template.
Next, map PDP order. Price, short benefit line, variant picker, delivery date for Dubai, Tabby or Tamara split price, add to cart, trust icons, then reviews. If your layout places long description blocks before reviews and payment options, reorder. CXL reported in an October 2024 teardown of 40 Shopify PDPs that moving social proof and delivery within the first two screens increased scroll to add to cart by 14% on average.
Then check collection filtering. Dawn filtering is minimal and fast but needs metafield work for size and shade. Prestige and Impulse filter well but can load heavy faceted search scripts. Test on a mid range Android device on 4G, not office wifi. That is how most Sharjah and Abu Dhabi shoppers will meet your store.
Keep the audit to one page. Design and version, three speed numbers, five PDP order notes, app keep or remove list, and one test idea. That is enough to act without a rebuild.
FAQ
Can I identify any Shopify store design for free?
Yes. Paste any public Shopify URL and you will usually get the family and OS version in seconds. Private custom builds or headless setups may return as custom, which still tells you maintenance will be higher.
Is it legal to look up a competitor design?
Yes. Detectors read public source code that Shopify already serves to every visitor. You are not accessing admin data. Do not copy copyrighted code or licensed assets, just learn from structure and test your own version.
Why do two stores on the same design perform differently?
Because apps, images, copy order, and checkout settings differ. In our 50+ store audits, app count and image weight explained more variance than the starting template. Same setup with cleaner scripts and clearer delivery messaging won consistently.
Which option is best for UAE conversion?
There is no single best option for the region. Dawn is fastest to optimize if you have dev help. Prestige and Impulse suit catalogs with strong imagery but need script control. Choose based on catalog size, Arabic needs, and team capacity, then audit speed and PDP order.
What should I do after finding a competitor design I like?
Note its PDP order, review placement, and delivery messaging, then test one element on your store. Do not clone it. Replicate the system behind faster loads and clearer trust, and measure for two to four weeks depending on traffic.
