The median Shopify checkout completion rate โ the share of shoppers who start checkout and actually place an order โ is 38% to 48% in 2026, with top-decile stores hitting 60% to 75%. This is a different number from your site conversion rate, and most store owners confuse the two. Site conversion rate counts every session that becomes an order from any starting point. Checkout completion isolates the bottom of the funnel, from the moment a buyer starts checkout to the moment they pay. If you want to know where revenue is leaking, this is the metric that tells you. Before you touch a single setting, read the complete Shopify CRO guide to see where checkout fits in the wider funnel, then come back to this one number.
Checkout completion rate is the percentage of shoppers who begin checkout and finish with a paid order. You measure it in Shopify Analytics under Online Store Conversion Over Time, or in GA4 (Google Analytics 4) with a funnel built on the begin_checkout, add_payment_info, and purchase events. It matters more than site conversion rate for diagnosis because it strips out everything upstream. A store with a 2% site conversion rate could have an excellent checkout (60% completion) and a weak upper funnel, or a broken checkout (30% completion) and a strong one. The two scenarios require completely different fixes, and the site conversion rate can't tell you which one you're in.
Across 50+ Shopify store audits since 2024, the median baseline site conversion rate at engagement start is 1.1%, and the median lift after six months of active CRO is 2.3%. But the fastest-moving numbers in our audits are almost always at checkout, because that's where friction is densest and most fixable.
A good blended checkout completion rate in 2026 is 45% to 55%, with the top quartile at 52% to 60% and the top decile at 60% to 75%. Aggregated data from more than 5,000 Shopify storefronts in 2026, cross-referenced with Shopify's merchant benchmarks and Littledata's ecommerce conversion research, puts the tiers as follows:
| Tier | Checkout completion rate | | --- | --- | | Top 10% | 60% โ 75% | | Top 25% | 52% โ 60% | | Median | 38% โ 48% | | Bottom 25% | 28% โ 38% | | Bottom 10% | Under 28% |
Anything under 40% signals a structural issue: a broken payment flow, surprise shipping costs, forced account creation, or a trust deficit at the payment step. Don't benchmark globally, though. Benchmark to your vertical, your average order value band, and your returning-customer mix first. A brand-new store with mostly first-time visitors can hit 40% at best, no matter how clean the checkout is, while a mature store with a strong repeat base routinely clears 55%.
Mobile checkout completion runs 10 to 15 points behind desktop within the same store: desktop averages 48% to 58%, mobile 35% to 45%. That gap matters more in the UAE than almost anywhere else, because 78.67% of all UAE e-commerce orders now happen on a phone. The gap used to be a 3x difference in the early 2020s; it's now roughly 1.5x to 2x, and express wallets are the reason. Stores where Shop Pay (Shopify's accelerated checkout that stores payment and shipping details for one-tap purchase) and Apple Pay sit above the email field on mobile see completion within 3 to 5 points of desktop. Stores where they're buried below the credit card form still pay the full penalty. On a phone, the alternative to a wallet is typing a 16-digit card number on a cramped keyboard โ one of the highest-friction moments in e-commerce.
Apple's retail partner data shows Apple Pay reaches a 92% checkout completion rate on mobile in the UAE versus 68% to 75% for manual card entry. With iPhone share above 45% in the UAE, that's nearly half your mobile shoppers who can skip the form entirely.
Vertical moves the number by 10 to 20 points. Low-AOV, frequently-replenished categories convert highest, and high-AOV, high-consideration categories convert lowest. Median 2026 checkout completion rates by vertical:
| Vertical | Median completion rate | | --- | --- | | Food and beverage | 55% โ 65% | | Beauty and cosmetics | 48% โ 58% | | Apparel and accessories | 42% โ 52% | | Electronics | 38% โ 48% | | Home and furniture | 32% โ 42% | | Jewelry | 28% โ 38% |
Average order value (AOV) has the same mechanical effect. Below AED 100 (about $27), median completion is 50% to 62%; above AED 1,100 (about $300), it drops to 30% to 42%. This is the contrarian point most store owners miss: if you sell high-ticket items, a checkout completion rate that looks "low" against a global average may actually be healthy for your AOV band. The levers are different too. At high AOV, buy now, pay later options, explicit guarantees, and trust density move the number; at low AOV, they barely matter.
Returning customers are the single largest source of variance within a store. Median checkout completion for first-time visitors is 28% to 40%; for returning customers with three or more prior purchases it's 65% to 80%. This explains why a 2-year-old store with a strong repeat base clears 55% blended while a brand-new store tops out near 40% with the same checkout. In the UAE, first-time buyer conversion is a particularly painful gap because paid social traffic is dominated by cold audiences who have never bought from you. We covered the specific fixes in our first-time buyer conversion guide, but the headline is that you can't fix a returning-customer number with checkout changes alone โ you fix it with retention flows that make the second and third purchase frictionless.
"The gap between GCC stores and the global median is a trust-infrastructure gap, not a buyer-behavior gap. Once Tabby, Tamara, and COD transparency are in place, we routinely see GCC stores convert at or above the global median." โ Mohammed Shafeeq, Founder of ConvFetti
The stores consistently hitting top-decile completion share the same six patterns, according to 2026 aggregated storefront data:
None of these are glamorous. They're all friction removal and trust placement, and they compound.
Split the bottom of the funnel into two stages before you change anything. Cart-to-checkout โ the share of shoppers who open the cart and click Checkout โ has a 2026 median of 45% to 60%. Checkout-to-purchase โ started checkout and placed an order โ runs 38% to 55%. The first is mostly cart UX, cart-drawer design, and free-shipping visibility. The second is checkout UX, payment options, and trust. Diagnose each separately in GA4 or Shopify Analytics, because the fix for one is worthless for the other.
We audited a Dubai cosmetics store that looked healthy on paper: a 2.1% site conversion rate, comfortably above its category median. The checkout completion rate was 31% โ bottom quartile. The owner had spent months adding trust badges. The real leak was a third-party checkout app that had stripped out the express payment buttons and made the phone number field mandatory. Reordering payment methods so Apple Pay sat first, cutting the phone field, and restoring guest checkout moved checkout completion from 31% to 44% in six weeks. That's the highest-signal lesson from our audits: measure the stage, find the specific friction, and fix that โ not the prettiest-looking thing on the page.
For UAE and GCC stores, four things move the number faster than anything in the Western playbook. First, the payment stack. Tabby (the UAE's largest buy now, pay later provider) and Tamara (the Saudi market leader) are not optional add-ons anymore โ Tabby's 2026 survey of 20,999 shoppers across Saudi Arabia and the UAE found 69.9% would avoid a retailer that doesn't offer flexible payment options, and roughly 60% to 65% of adults in both markets have registered with Tabby. Second, biometric checkout. The Central Bank's March 2026 directive to phase out SMS-based OTPs pushed UAE platforms toward fingerprint and face ID, cutting mobile checkout time by an estimated 30% to 40%. Stores that still rely on OTP loops are now slower than the market baseline.
Third, cash on delivery positioning. COD still accounts for roughly 25% to 30% of UAE e-commerce transactions, down from 40% in 2022 but far above Western levels. It must be visible at the payment step, not hidden in an accordion. Fourth, shipping transparency on the product page. Baymard's 2025 research found unexpected extra costs are the top fixable abandonment reason at 39%, and the DHL 2026 Ecommerce Trends Report ranks free shipping as the number-one reason shoppers complete a purchase. Show your delivery window and free shipping threshold before checkout, not at it.
Baymard Institute's checkout usability research, built on more than 200,000 hours of testing across 327 top-grossing US and EU sites, found that better checkout design alone can lift conversion by roughly 35% on large sites. Shopify's checkout research shows Shop Pay converts at up to 1.72x the rate of standard guest checkouts. For a Dubai store where the majority of traffic is mobile, those two facts โ an express wallet at the top of the form and a lean checkout around it โ are the cheapest revenue you'll ever find.
A good blended rate is 45% to 55%. The top quartile sits at 52% to 60% and the top decile at 60% to 75%. Anything under 40% usually signals a structural problem like forced account creation, surprise shipping costs, or buried payment options. Benchmark against your vertical, AOV band, and returning-customer mix before comparing to a global number.
Mobile runs 10 to 15 points behind desktop because form entry is harder on a phone. The fix is express wallets: stores where Shop Pay and Apple Pay sit above the email field get within 3 to 5 points of desktop. Apple Pay completes at 92% on mobile in the UAE versus 68% to 75% for manual card entry.
Yes. Shopify's data shows Shop Pay converts at roughly 1.72x the rate of standard guest checkout. It eliminates manual entry of payment and shipping details, which matters most on mobile. The catch is placement: it only helps if it's the first option a shopper sees, above the email field.
Cart abandonment covers everyone who adds a product but never orders. Checkout abandonment is the subset who start checkout and leave. Baymard's aggregated research puts average cart abandonment at 70.22%; the 2026 median checkout-to-purchase completion of 38% to 55% means roughly half of checkout starters abandon. They're diagnosed differently and fixed differently.
Surface express payments at the top of the form and confirm Tabby and Tamara are live on both product pages and checkout. BNPL accounts for 40%+ of fashion and beauty purchases in the UAE, and the Tabby 2026 survey found 69.9% of shoppers avoid retailers without flexible payment options. That single change usually moves the number more than any field reduction.
